Heat pump brands compared: which one should you actually buy?

An installer’s honest comparison of the brands we fit every week — what each is genuinely best at, and the things that matter more than the badge.

The honest starting point

All the major brands make reliable equipment. Differences in efficiency between quality brands are smaller than the difference made by correct sizing and a proper install. A cheap unit installed well will outperform a premium unit installed badly, every time.

That said, brands do differ in quiet operation, cold-weather performance, filtration, controls and price. Here’s how the ones we supply actually compare.

Panasonic

Best for: reliable value across most Auckland homes.

Panasonic is our most-installed brand and the one we recommend by default for straightforward jobs. Solid build, quiet operation, good efficiency and sensible pricing. The RZ range covers most needs; the Z range adds built-in WiFi control. Backed by a 5-year manufacturer warranty.

Daikin

Best for: proven engineering and long service life.

Daikin does one thing — air conditioning — and has done for decades. The R32 Standard range is a workhorse: dependable, well-supported, with parts availability that matters when a unit is ten years old. Priced slightly above Panasonic. 5-year manufacturer warranty.

Mitsubishi Electric

Best for: cold performance, quiet running, and premium finishes.

The widest range we carry. The GS series is the value option, AP Classic the everyday workhorse, EF Designer adds white, black or silver finishes, and LN Black Diamond is genuinely the best-looking unit on the market if the room matters to you. The HyperCore variants hold heating output better in the cold. There’s also a floor console range for villas and rooms where a high wall unit won’t work.

Midea

Best for: budget-conscious jobs and rentals.

Midea is the value end of what we install. It does the job at a noticeably lower price, which makes it a sensible pick for rentals, sleepouts, spare rooms, or when you’re doing several rooms at once and budget is the constraint. Not as refined or as quiet as the premium brands — but honest equipment at an honest price.

How to actually choose

If it’s a rental or a spare room

Midea. Spend the savings on getting the size right and the install tidy. For rentals, check the Healthy Homes requirements first — capacity matters more than brand.

If it’s your main living room

Panasonic or Daikin. This is the unit you’ll live with every winter evening — quiet operation and reliability are worth the modest premium.

If the room’s appearance matters

Mitsubishi Electric EF Designer or LN Black Diamond. If you’ve just renovated and don’t want a white plastic box on the wall, this is the range to look at.

If you’re doing the whole house

Look at ducted before you buy four wall units — see our ducted vs high-wall comparison.

What matters more than brand

  • Correct sizing. Undersized units run flat out and cost more. Start with our sizing calculator.
  • Placement. Where the indoor and outdoor units go affects both performance and noise.
  • Install quality. Pipework, vacuum, charge and commissioning determine whether a unit lasts 8 years or 15.
  • Servicing. An unserviced premium unit will be beaten by a serviced budget one.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Which heat pump brand is best in New Zealand?

There's no single best. Panasonic and Daikin are excellent all-rounders, Mitsubishi Electric leads on range and finishes, and Midea is the value option. Sizing and install quality affect your result more than the badge does.

Is a more expensive heat pump cheaper to run?

Marginally, but the difference between quality brands is small compared with the effect of correct sizing, good insulation and regular servicing. Don't buy a premium brand expecting dramatically lower power bills.

What warranty do heat pumps come with?

The brands we install carry a minimum 5-year manufacturer warranty covering parts and labour, and our installation workmanship is guaranteed on top of that. Exact terms are confirmed in your quote.

Do you install brands other than these?

We service and repair most major brands including Fujitsu and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. For new installs we stick to the brands we know inside out and can support properly.
